SEND

Welcome Parents!

At Black Combe Junior School, we believe in a collaborative approach to supporting every child. We understand that navigating SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) can sometimes feel complex, so we've outlined the key roles involved in ensuring your child receives the best possible support. We are all part of a dedicated team working together to help your child thrive. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.

The SENCo: Your Main Point of Contact

Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo)

Our SENCos are your primary contact for all SEND-related matters. They are responsible for:

  • Coordinating SEND Support: Ensuring a cohesive and effective plan is in place for children with SEND.

  • Parent Partnership: Building strong links with parents and carers to ensure open communication and shared understanding.

  • External Liaisons: Connecting with external agencies and professionals to bring in specialist expertise.

  • Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records for all children receiving SEND support.

  • Staff Support: Providing guidance and training to all teaching and support staff on SEND best practices.

The SENCos work closely with all staff, external professionals, and parents to ensure that individual needs are identified and met. They are dedicated to ensuring every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

The Class Teacher: Day-to-Day Support

Class Teacher

Your child's class teacher plays a vital role in their daily learning journey. They are responsible for:

  • Day-to-Day Learning: Differentiating instruction and providing engaging learning experiences within the classroom.

  • Progress Monitoring: Continuously assessing your child's progress and identifying any emerging needs.

  • Student Support Plans (SSPs): Implementing and adapting strategies outlined in SSPs to support individual learning goals.

  • Consistent Delivery: Ensuring that SEND support is consistently applied within their classroom.

  • Policy Adherence: Following school policies and procedures related to SEND.

The Headteacher: Overall Management

Headteacher

The Headteacher has overall responsibility for the school and its operations, including SEND provision. Their role involves:

  • Overall Management: Ensuring the school provides effective and equitable education for all pupils.

  • Delegation and Oversight: Delegating responsibilities for SEND to the SENCo and other staff, and overseeing the implementation of the SEND policy.

  • Governing Body Updates: Reporting on SEND provision and outcomes to the school's Governing Body.

The SEND Governor: Ensuring Support

SEND Governor

Our SEND Governor is a member of the Governing Body who has a specific interest in ensuring that the school effectively supports children with SEND. They:

  • Ensure Support: Work with the Headteacher and SENCo to scrutinize and ensure that SEND provision is adequate and effective.

  • Challenge and Support: Provide strategic oversight and challenge to the school's leadership regarding SEND.

Our Collaborative Approach

We believe that by working together – parents, teachers, the SENCo, Headteacher, and Governors – we can create the most supportive and inclusive environment for your child. If you have any concerns or wish to discuss your child's SEND support, please do not hesitate to contact:

  • Your child's Class Teacher in the first instance.

  • Our SENCos are Catherine Dennison and Sarah Morton

  • Or the School Office to be directed to the appropriate person.

We are here to help and support you and your child every step of the way.
