Modern Foreign Language

At Black Combe Junior School, we believe that every day, every opportunity, every experience and every child counts. Through our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum, we aim to inspire children to develop a love of languages and a curiosity about the wider world. Learning Spanish helps children to communicate in new ways, explore different cultures and develop an understanding of the similarities and differences that make every community unique. Using the Language Angels scheme of learning, we provide a broad, progressive and engaging curriculum that supports all pupils in becoming confident and enthusiastic language learners.

We believe that learning a language opens doors to new experiences and opportunities. Through speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish, children develop the confidence to communicate, express their ideas and take risks in their learning. Lessons are carefully planned to build knowledge and skills over time, helping pupils to develop secure foundations in Spanish while fostering independence, resilience and a positive attitude towards learning.

Through learning about Spanish-speaking countries, traditions and cultures, pupils gain a greater appreciation of the world around them and develop respect for people whose experiences may be different from their own. We encourage children to be curious, confident and ambitious learners who are willing to have a go, learn from mistakes and celebrate success.

Our Spanish curriculum supports the core values that underpin life at Black Combe Junior School:

  • Responsibility by encouraging pupils to take ownership of their learning and persevere when faced with new challenges.
  • Co-operation through speaking, listening and working together to practise and develop language skills.
  • Honesty by reflecting on their learning, recognising achievements and identifying next steps.
  • Respect through appreciating different languages, cultures and traditions from around the world.
  • Kindness by encouraging and supporting others as they grow in confidence as language learners.

Spanish also helps our children develop a sense of belonging within local, national and global communities. By learning another language, pupils gain a deeper understanding of how people communicate and connect with one another, helping them to become more open-minded and culturally aware citizens.

At Black Combe Junior School, we want every child to leave with a positive attitude towards language learning, a secure foundation in Spanish and the confidence to continue their language journey at secondary school and beyond. By fostering curiosity, confidence and communication, we aim to inspire lifelong learning and help our pupils grow, achieve, aspire and inspire.
